“All About You” is a new 3 year project partly funded by Sport England, which aims to support those living with dementia and their carers to continue or re-start physical activities. Those caring for a person with dementia will often place their own needs behind the needs of the person they care for, and for some this includes stopping any physical activity, exercise or sport they enjoy. This is where “All About You” steps in; volunteers are linked with carers and their loved-ones so that carers can take part in activities, knowing the person they care for is being looked after.
Cotman Housing Association are leading this project, in partnership with Age UK (Norwich) who recruit and train volunteers. The volunteers will offer ongoing support, motivation and encouragement to carers, and also attend activities with them if necessary.
As the needs of people affected by dementia and their carers are so varied, the project aims to be flexible and tailored to the individual situation and needs of the participants. For example, volunteers can accompany the person with dementia in the café of a leisure centre as their carer does their activity, or they can assist both the person with dementia and their carer to access a physical activity together.
